Is Kyle Sandilands unsackable?

Kyle Sandilands - Big Brother promotional pictureThe knives are out again for 2Day breakfast host Kyle Sandilands after his insensitive handling of a young girl who confessed to being raped at age 12. (See The Punch's spin on the story here.) As I discovered back in 2001 - when Sandilands orchestrated a on-air confrontation between a schoolgirl and her mother, who had slept with the girl's boyfriend - 2Day owner Austereo's main concern is ratings, and Sandilands will have a job as long as he delivers strong figures. Nothing short of a listener boycott will unthrone the self-proclaimed king of commercial FM breakfast radio.
PS: Back in 2001, Sandilands told me he overruled co-host Jackie O in putting the segment to air because of his "experience". Eight years later, he has learned nothing. A radio station has no business strapping a 14-year-old to a lie-detector and asking her about her sexual experiences.

He'll be sackable once he

He'll be sackable once he becomes advertiser poison. Everyone outraged about this needs to write to the businesses who advertise on 2DayFM and tell them how unacceptable their support of this crap is and how you can't in good conscience support their business while they're associated with people who think that the sex lives of children are hilarious morning entertainment (not that rape = sex life, but they were pretty happy to talk about it until that revelation).

I won't hold my breath
I won't hold my breath for that to happen, although I really think he has gone too far this time. I've read all sorts of online comments defending him - how the mother is to blame, how they wound up the section quickly when they heard about the rape etc - but the fact is, the girl should not have been on the show in the first place. It's not entertainment to ask a 14-year-old about her sexual experience. Also, nobody has said yet whether the section was pre-recorded or live. Even if it was "live", it should have been on a delay - as talkback calls routinely are - and the button should have been pushed as soon as she mentioned the rape. But, having said that, it should never have gone to air in the first place. There are no excuses or mitigating circumstances for that.

Vile Sandilsnds

This man is beneath contempt. He has no talent, no skill and nothing redeems who he is and why he inflicts himself on the nation. All those who work with him should figuratively turn their back on him and the rest of us should allow him no breathable air of publicity and let him be shunned. Once he has been completely ignored and he is in his own space with his own poisonous nature perhaps some internal thought will emerge as to why he is so despised and then rehabilitation can occur.
In short - ignore his broadcasts, actively boycott and politely harrass the advertizers of his show. Once the revenues decrease then change happens.
