John Howard's American roots

Is the Americanisation of Australia complete? When he called ailing DJ Stan Zemanek last night, our Prime Minister John Howard apparently said: "We're thinking of you and rooting for you." Has nobody told the PM that the word "root" has quite a different meaning in colloquial Australian English than it does in the US?
