Radio rantings

I reported on the latest radio ratings survey here yesterday, but I've since had a few more thoughts:
+ It's interesting that the combined audience for the youth-targetted B105, Nova 106.9 and Triple J has grown. Now, unless more young people are listening to radio, or fewer older people are, it means that these stations have a broader appeal than their music playlist suggests. My guess is that people are tuning-in to hear the on-air talent rather than the songs. If that's the case, B105's Labrat, Camilla and Stav and Nova's Meshel, Ash, Kip and Luttsy deserve a big pat on the back for growing the pie not just the piece.
+ During an email discussion I had about the ratings with an FM radio person, they referred to B105 being No.2 in breakfast. In fact, 612ABC's Spencer Howson is No. 2 in breakfast, B105 is No. 3. In the world of commercial radio, the ABC doesn't seem to count. That confounds me because, while Aunty isn't competing for the advertisers' dollars, it can and does drag audiences away from the commercial stations. For that reason, I suggest, the FM folks should be extremely interested in what the ABC is doing, so they can pinch it - in the same way Channel 7 acquired Kath and Kim.
Disclosure: I'm heard on 612ABC on Friday mornings, and used to be on B105 (before they really started rating well).
