Save the Regent!

Save the Regent!

Posted February 13th, 2008 by debritz

This is a holding page for the Save the Regent campaign, designed to stop the Regent theatre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, being developed into a tower block. You can read about it here and here. Please return soon for the full service. In the meantime, you can use the Email me link at left to send a message of support for the campaign. Please indicate whether you want your name added to the list of people who want to save the Regent. You can also join the "Save the Regent" group on Facebook.
Update:In less than 24 hours since I began the campaign to save Brisbane's Regent theatre, almost 100 people have already joined the Facebook group "Save the Regent", I've had offers of serious help from people who know how to run these campaigns (which is great, because I really don't) and are passionate about preserving our past, and I've spoke on the breakfast shows of 4BC, 4KQ and 612 ABC. Let's keep the ball rolling!

How do I join the Facebook

How do I join the Facebook group? A search for "Save the Regent" doesn't bring anything up...

Brisbane has lost too much

Brisbane has lost too much of its heritage, we cannot afford to loose the Regent. We have lost The Wintergarden, Festival Hall, Cloudland the original Shingle Inn to name a few. Our leaders at each level of Government should listen to the voice of the people.

Compared to most cities in

Compared to most cities in the world Brisbane is very young and has had little time to develop a cultural heritage. If we don't hang on to what we have got Brisbane will become a boring towerblock lanscape with no heart.
So - SAVE THE REGENT!!!!!

save the regent

build the office towers elsewhere as historic, beautiful buildings are an endangered species in this country. How will we ever have any class if we keep tearing down our elegant, classic beauties like the Regent.

What a travesty. I have so

What a travesty.

I have so many wonderful memories of seeing films in this divine cinema. Enjoying a coffee beforehand in Aromas, seeing arthouse cinema.

In the '80s, I saw the partial destruction of our city under the influence of the Bjelke-Petersen government, and I swore I would do whatever it takes to prevent that from happening again. Let's face it: Brisbane is losing its character at the hands of architects who have no idea how to design something that blends in with the city's older character. The city has become a hodge podge of the very old and beautiful and the extremely tall and hideous.

Surely there is room for this beautiful cinema and other buildings like it in our cultural landscape? It's time to reclaim our city and prevent the government and developers from cashing in and destroying it. It's time to take a stand and ensure we protect the little architectural history the city retains at this moment in time.

Im in to assist. This is a joke. I have only just moved from Sydney to Brisbane. I only had just discussed with friends about how the gov should restore this grand old lady.... one word MEDIA!!! WE get them involved and backing the old lady and half the battle is one!!!

Suggestion... Make this a national thing.... Get the morning TV shows on board. Also "At the movies." on ABC. Courier Mail The Australian

Im not sure how I can help.. But I will try.

My boyfriend and i totally

My boyfriend and i totally support your campaign. We are sick of Brisbane politicians allowing heritage building after heritage building to be pulled down or 'refurbished' in Brisbane. The David Jones building is nice for a modern building but has been RUINED of any heritage value that it had in the past with it's 'refurbishment'. It seems like any big developer with enough money can get away with 'refurbishing' these beautiful heritage buildings to within an inch of their orignal life. If you travel cities around the world they have historical buildings 1000's of years old and spend a lot of money upkeeping these. Australia does not have the luxury of 1000's of years of history, so it certainly shouldn't destroy it's buildings with any historical value at all.

Restore the Regent to it's former glory. We need to show pride in our history, not eradicate or alter it!

As a local of Brisbane I

As a local of Brisbane I want to see the Regent stay as it is for not only myself, but for future generations to come. Brisbane has already let to much heritage disappear.
